I
read somewhere that the original lyrics to "Danny Boy" were
written by a
Westcountry man, and so checked out one Fred Weatherly (d 1929) - a Victorian
lawyer/songwriter from Portishead who also penned "Roses of Picardy".
For
those who know Portishead, he built The Abbey in Woodhill Road on the
proceeds....... Red'Un, July 2000
(Chorus)
Oh
Danny boy the West the West is calling.
From Ashton Gate and down by Severnside.
Pulis has gone and all the crowd is cheering,
'Tis youth, 'tis youth must play, and play with pride.
So
we'll be back when sun's upon the Malago.
Or when Chew valley's hushed and bright with snow.
'Tis we'll be there in Dolman or the Atyeo.
Oh Danny boy, Oh Danny boy we love you so.
And
when Easter comes and City boys are flying
If we are top, as top we well may be,
We'll come and find the place where you are playing,
And stand and drink our zider there for 'ee.
Chorus
As for the gas, they'll
be no match for City
Our victories will warmer, sweeter be,
As they go down, quite rightly to division three
We'll take the peace, unto eternity
